 United Faculty of Florida-Retired Chapter

To UFF Retired Members and Prospective Members:

The UFF Senate voted unanimously at the February 8-9, 2020 Senate meeting in Tampa to establish a UFF-Retired Chapter separate from At-Large membership. Mike Budd, Michael Moats and Bruce Nissen are currently leading the formation of this Chapter, drafting its Bylaws, and organizing its first election, with Mike as Interim President.

The purpose of the Retired Chapter is to actively support local UFF chapters, the state UFF organization, the Florida Education Association, the labor movement and community coalitions through organizing, political action, Central Labor Councils and other UFF-centered actions for the common good.

There are currently approximately 96 retired UFF members, most living in Florida. UFFs current working chapters always need more volunteers, especially volunteers with experience. Thats us! Members of the Retired Chapter can liaison with and support other chapters, in organizing and recruiting, collective bargaining, government relations and political action, community and communications outreach, and as delegates to local central labor councils.

Some of us are already assisting UFF chapters around the state. For example, Mike Budd is a retired faculty member at FAU in Boca Raton, and has helped his chapter there to become a majority union. Michael Moats is a retired faculty member at HCC and a retired UFF staff member who has trained and assisted UFF leaders around the state. And Bruce Nissen, a labor educator retired from FIU, chairs the UFF statewide Contract Enforcement Committee and has worked with Mike Budd on the Adjunct Task Force to build solidarity with adjuncts organizing through SEIU. He also helps organize faculty in the Tampa-St. Petersburg area, where he now lives. And there are other retired UFF members working to build our union throughout the state.

The UFF Retired Chapter seeks to stimulate and support more such activity. Another project is to build our chapter membership by contacting union friends and other chapters to identify retiring and retired UFF members whom we can recruit for our chapter. Some retired members may want to become active in the FEA-Retired organization.

Whether youre already retired or just planning on retirement, there are many opportunities in joining and becoming active in the new UFF Retired Chapter. Please watch this UFF site for updates and, if you aren't already a member, download the membership form, complete it, and submit it to the address on the form so you can become part of the Retired Chapter and maintain your association with UFF, FEA, NEA, AFT, and AFL-CIO. Lifetime dues are only $400 for all these affiliates a great deal!

Perhaps you have other ideas about what a Retired Chapter, and individual members, could do. Please send your ideas to Bruce Nissen at . If youre interested in becoming active in the Retired Chapter, let him know about that, too, and in what capacity. Much of the work of running the chapter (elections, notifications, etc.) will need to be done by members, so well need volunteers there.

Please watch this UFF site for updates and, if you aren't already a member, please download the membership form, complete it, and submit to Tallahassee so you can become part of the Retired Chapter and maintain your association with UFF, FEA, NEA, AFT, and AFL-CIO.
